NEWSMAKER: Missile Man
Selected for NSD’s Theatre Olympics
Missile Man
will be an integral part of National School of Drama's (NSD) 8th Theatre
Olympics 2018, scheduled to be held in Delhi and 16 other major cities, from
February 17 to April 8, 2018
It’s time for remarkable excitement, joy and
anticipation for everyone involved with Missile Man, an innovative and creative
dance drama, showcasing Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s teachings, work and contributions
to the Indian nation and society in general. Especially for Raja Anand, the
founder-director of Space Performing Arts, whose brainchild is Missile Man.
The drama has been shortlisted for participation at NSD’s 8th Theatre Olympics
2018. NSD is an autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Culture, Government of
India, and wherein selection committee comprises eminent theatre personalities,
scholars and critics from across India.
The Origin of the Project
Raja Anand was privileged to attend an event
in 2007 wherein Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was the chief guest, and delivered a short
speech. The speech impressed him so much that he was compelled to know more
about him, his life, his writings, his teachings, and his work.
His study and research on Dr. Kalam inspired him to carry forward his message,
his vision that envisages a better life for the citizens of India – through the
media that he knows the best – the performing arts.
Speaking to Indian Sounds & Steps, Anand
said, “The objective of the Missile Man project is to educate mainly those who
have had no access or knowledge of his ideologies. The series will also be a
glowing tribute to Dr. Kalam, acknowledging his contributions and services to
the country.
The Missile Man Project is an attempt to portray an exciting artistic blend of
both the Indian and Western worlds.
Technology with a
Heart
Dr. Kalam’s life and contributions are
synonymous with technology. Raja Anand believes technology can be best
represented by the ‘wheel’. It was the invention of the ‘wheel; that ushered in
the era of inventions and discoveries that changed the world forever. The
‘wheel’ symbolizes the ambitions of the mankind to make progress in the fields
of science and technology. So he came with the idea of showcasing the ‘wheel’
and its significances, in this artistic project dedicated to Dr. Kalam.
In the entire presentation, not only the dancers, but also the
background, the lightings, the colors, the ambience, will revolve around the
shape of the ‘wheel’. The theme of the ‘wheel’ will have a lot of the inherent
aspects of India’s various traditional dance forms.
From Grind to Greatness
To shortlist the most appropriate performers
for Missile Man, Raja Anand conducted an audition for potential candidates from
New Delhi and the NCR region. Thereafter, a series of workshops was also
conducted with the aim of making the final selection. The selected members were
trained to be well-versed with both Indian traditional and western-contemporary
performing arts
Anand
revealed to Indian Sounds & Steps, “Practice sessions were not only focused
on the performing arts, the postures and the movements. It also stressed
heavily on every member imbibing the right spirit, sensitivities and humaneness
– that Dr. Kalam was famous for.”
After training under Raja Anand for several months, the Missile Man was ready –
showcasing an exciting artistic blend of both the Indian and Western worlds.

The
crew members were unified in believing that more than a play or a performing
arts project, Missile Man was an extraordinary experience – which not only
brought them, but also the audience, closer to the thoughts and visions of the
Great Man.

INTRODUCTION & ARTISTIC VISION & MISSION
In 2007 I attended an event in Delhi where Dr Abdual Kalam was the honourable chief guest. He inaugurated the event and gave a short speech, after listening to his words I felt compelled to hear more and read his writings. During my research on Dr Abdul Kalam his work and thoughts highly inspired me and gave me a new way to explore my work. I think there are many people like me who can benefit in every walk of life like I did, I wish to carry his message and vision to educate privileged and under-privileged people both so that they can access his ideology.
I will try to spread his message in rural India. I feel as an artist it's my responsibility to showcase his life and show how much we all can learn and inspire ourselves to achieve our dreams and be good human beings and contribute to society. My aim is to travel and promote the project “Missile Man” in Indian villages. My motto is to keep it simple, not too flashy and express his life through art.
